The Summer Foot Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

When people think about summer wellness, they usually focus on sunscreen, hydration, and staying cool. But there’s one part of the body that’s often forgotten until it starts itching, burning, or peeling—your feet.

Believe it or not, summer is one of the easiest times of year to develop athlete’s foot.

And despite the name, you don’t have to be an athlete to get it.

You don’t even have to be a man.

As a certified herbalist and licensed nurse, one of the biggest misconceptions I hear is, “I thought athlete’s foot only happened to people who work out.”

Not true.

Athlete’s foot thrives in warm, moist environments. That means sweaty work boots, damp gym shoes, wet socks after a walk in the rain, long days at amusement parks, pool decks, locker rooms, and even staying in the same shoes all day can create the perfect environment for fungal growth.

The first signs are often easy to ignore.

Maybe your toes itch just a little.

Maybe you notice peeling skin.

Maybe your feet seem to have an odor even though you just washed them.

Many people don’t realize these small changes can be early warning signs that your feet need a little extra attention.

The good news?

Prevention is often much easier than treatment.

A few simple habits—like thoroughly drying between your toes, rotating your shoes, changing damp socks, and keeping your feet as dry as possible—can make a tremendous difference during the hot summer months.

I also believe nature has given us remarkable plants that have supported skin wellness for generations. As a certified herbalist, I enjoy teaching traditional herbal preparations alongside practical wellness habits that people can incorporate into everyday life.

One of my favorite seasonal foot care recipes combines a time-honored botanical with a few simple pantry ingredients to create an easy homemade skin cream that I keep in my herbal apothecary.

Your feet carry you through life. This summer, don’t forget to take care of them.
